Ingredients
- 450g plain white flour
- 225g wholemeal flour
- 1 tsp bicarbonate of soda
- 2 tsp salt
- 25g butter
- 568ml buttermilk
How to make it
- Preheat the oven 180C, gas mark 4
- Sieve all the dry ingredients into a bowl
- Rub in the butter
- Add the buttermilk a little at a time, you may need to add a little more or water, depending on the temperature of the flour
- Mix well
- Form a dough into a circular shape and place on a baking tray or in a roasting tin
- Score on top with a knife, into the shape of a cross
- Bake for 40 to 45 minutes
- Remove from the tray and return to the oven for a further 10 minutes
This
classic Irish bread is great served with local jam or honey or for a
more substantial breakfast top with toasted cheese or a poached egg.
