Why mums need a little breakfast love too

If you’ve been keeping up with our blog posts, you’ll know that we’ve been looking into the breakfast habits of the nation. For many of us growing up, the one person who constantly reminded us about the importance of breakfast was our mum, and we’re sure it is the same in most households today. It appears though, that in many cases mums may not always be following their own advice.

We should all know that breakfast can make you healthier and happier – after all there’s plenty of research to support this – but less than half of mums we surveyed knew why breakfast was good for them. Without breakfast, your body is effectively running on empty (it’s like trying to start the car with no petrol!) Despite this, our study revealed that four in ten mums admit to skipping breakfast because they prioritise getting other family members ready in the morning.

It seems there’s also a more modern distraction in the morning that our mums never had to deal with – social networking. Our research shows that mums today are the most likely to prioritise checking Facebook or emails over eating breakfast, suggesting this is the only window in their day they have to catch up on correspondence.

One mum who appreciates the benefits of eating breakfast every morning is breakfast fan Nadia Sawalha. Nadia has provided us with her top tips for breakfast time which you can check out in the video below (just ensure you’re not doing this instead of eating breakfast!)

Here at Shake Up Your Wake Up we appreciate that mornings can be hectic and breakfast can sometimes fall low on your list of priorities. Taking just a few minutes to have something to eat in the morning can really pay off later in the day as you’ll have loads more energy and be in a better mood too. That is why we have a range of quick and easy recipes that are ready in less than 10 minutes, including our Marbled Fruity Porridge and Chutney Toast with Scrambled Eggs. Many of our recipes can be made in advance to save even more time in the morning and even enjoyed on the go if necessary, including our Oaty Yogurt with Nuts and Breakfast Energy Bars, as well as Nadia’s own Breakfast Scones (If you haven’t seen it yet you can check out the video for these on our recipes page).

So mums, remember in the morning that you need a little love too and make time for breakfast for yourself and not just the rest of the family!
